Eva is a native of northern Virginia. She obtained a bachelor's degree in the Administration of Justice from Virginia Commonwealth University. Later, she became a certified substance abuse counselor. She was employed as a Virginia state probation and parole officer for many years before becoming a federal probation officer in the Eastern District of Virginia in Alexandria. For 20 years as a federal officer, Eva supervised individuals on probation, parole, and supervised release who had convictions for various misdemeanor and felony offenses. She also led substance abuse treatment groups and spent a decade as a board member for Virginia ASAP (Alcohol Safety Action Program). Eva is understanding and compassionate, and always sees the good in people.
Nina grew up in New England and obtained a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Five-College Consortium . She then relocated to northern Virginia. In 1990 she obtained a Master of Science degree in Justice, Law, and Society from the American University in Washington, DC. She worked as a probation and parole officer for the Commonwealth of Virginia before becoming a federal probation officer in the Eastern District of Virginia. For the last 16 years of her 26-year federal career, she was a "Special Offenders Specialist," exclusively conducted pre-sentence investigations on individuals charged with serious offenses, including terrorism, public corruption, racketeering, drug smuggling, firearms trafficking, sex trafficking, and murder. During her service, she became a certified Critical Incident Stress debriefer and First Responder/EMT. She has a warm and empathetic nature and believes the vast majority of offenders can change their lives for the better with assistance and improved circumstances. She is a strong proponent of criminal justice and prison reform.
Nina and Eva are members of the National Legal Aid and Defender Association, the National Alliance of Sentencing Advocates and Mitigation Specialists, the National Defender Investigator Association, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
